Everything you need to know before your day in the cat
What is cat skiing?
Cat skiing is backcountry skiing and snowboarding accessed by snowcat instead of ski lifts. Our custom snowcats transport you and your group into Montana’s untouched powder terrain — no lift lines, no crowds, just you and your group.
Do I need prior backcountry skiing experience?
To join a GNPG trip, you should be confident skiing off-piste, across varied terrain and have the fitness to stay on the move all day. Our adventures are designed for advanced and experienced skiers and snowboarders.
How many runs will I get in a day?
Most groups average 8–12 runs per day, depending on conditions and group ability*. Our Private Steep & Deep Cat trip is for those who want more. We like to keep this cat light & fast so guests can get more runs of steep and treed terrain.
How big are the groups?
We keep group sizes small to maximize safety, efficiency, and fun. Our Powder Cat has 12 guests with 2 guides, and our Steep & Deep Cat has 10 guests with 2 guides.
Do you offer private cat bookings?
Yes! Book an entire snowcat for your group for the ultimate private powder experience. Inquire here.
When is your ski season open?
We welcome guests to GNPG from late December to mid-March. See our calendar
What ski/snowboard width is recommended?
For skiers we generally recommend a minimum of 105mm under foot or wider for optimal flotation. For snowboarders, aim for upsizing about 2-5cm.
Can I rent skis or snowboards?
Yes, rentals can be arranged upon arrival. Our rental shop has a selection of powder ski and snowboard rentals for $40/day. Guests should bring their own boots. We have poles free of charge.
Is lunch provided? What if I have allergies/dietary restrictions?
Lunch is included for you and we will accommodate all dietary restrictions as long as they are noted on your booking form.
What does a typical catskiing ski day look like?
Arrive at basecamp by 8:00am for coffee, rentals, and avalanche beacon assignment. Cats depart by 8:45am, with a quick stop for beacon training before the first run. Midday, enjoy a hot lunch at the Powder House, then ski through the afternoon. Return to basecamp is around 5:00pm, depending on conditions.
What should I bring?
Bring your usual backcountry ski or snowboard gear and clothing. You can also pack a small bag with extras like dry socks, gloves, a beanie, backup goggles, personal snacks, and a camera. Each cat is stocked with hot and cold drinks plus a variety of snacks, so you’ll stay fueled throughout the day.
What is included in the price?
Food & drinks (morning coffee, hot lunch, snacks and hot/cold beverages on cat) and professional guides leading all mountain activities.
What’s not included in the price?
The trip price does not cover ski or snowboard rentals (rentals available upon request), lodging or transportation to and from GNPG basecamp, personal gear (helmets, clothing, avalanche packs), gratuities for guide and staff.
What is the weather typically like?
Expect true Montana winter conditions. Temperatures can range from single digits to the 30s (°F), with frequent snowfall and changing visibility. We recommend dressing in layers with waterproof outerwear to stay warm and dry in all conditions.
What happens if the snow is so bad that my trip is cancelled?
If GNPG determines that conditions are unsafe or unskiable, we will cancel or reschedule your trip. In this rare event, you’ll be offered a refund or the option to rebook for another available date. See our booking conditions
What happens if a snowcat breaks during my trip?
Our fleet is professionally maintained, and backup cats are available. If a breakdown causes a delay, our team will work quickly to get you back on the slopes with minimal disruption.
Are there any age restrictions?
Snowcat skiing is best suited for strong, fit skiers and riders age 16+. Younger guests may be considered on a case-by-case basis if they meet ability requirements and are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
Guests who need to cancel should notify us as soon as possible. Refunds and credits depend on how far in advance you cancel and if your seat can be rebooked. Check out our cancellation policy here.
Can I stay at The Ranch the night before my trip?
Yes! Many of our fly-in guests choose to arrive the night before. You’re welcome to book an additional night at The Ranch to make your arrival stress-free. Check-in is available after 3:00 pm and dinner is included on the evening of your arrival.
