Welcome to Great Northern Powder Guides – Montana’s ONLY backcountry cat skiing / snowboarding operation.

We operate on over 20,000 acres in the beautiful Stillwater State Forest, a short 20 miles north of Whitefish, Montana. All of our trips are fully guided to provide guests with a safe and unforgettable backcountry experience.  We run 7 days a week with the ability to carry up to 14 guests in each snowcat.

Enjoy a Private Powder Cat for family & friends OR you can join up with like-minded others on a Non-Private Powder Cat.

Custom SnowCats

We custom manufacture our comfy cat cabins right here at Great Northern Cat Cabins.  We make innovative fiberglass cabins for cat and heli operations all over North America. They are unlike any other cat cabin you have ever ridden in – light, balanced, quiet, warm and posh. The cats are stocked with beverages and snacks to keep you hydrated and energized.  Each cat also has a great sound systems to keep the stoke going all day long!

Our cats are the perfect blend of sexy, safety, speed, versatility & reliability meaning you get more time in the “white room”.

We always have an ever expanding and improving fleet of cats to insure quick turnaround times in the unlikely event of a backcountry breakdown. We primarily run Pisten Bully’s but also have a sweet Bombardier and our famous “Snow Leopard” cat for smaller more intimate groups.

Over 17 Square Miles of Terrain

Great Northern Powder Guides creates a unique skiing experience for our clients by having access to both north and south facing slopes of usable terrain. With Great Northern Powder Guides, our guests have the opportunity to ski up to 14,000′ vertical per day. Trees, burned over areas, cleared open areas, glades, pillows, rocks, chutes… you name it, we’ve got it.

Check out the Great Northern Powder Guides Steep & Deep Cat. This is the opportunity for our more experienced guests to ski more vertical in our furthest and most challenging terrain. We like to keep this Private Powder Cat to 10 guests so we can stay light and fast for quicker laps.

Powder Tales

Hey Jay, I just wanted to thank you for the UNBELIEVABLE trip!… After the first day of skiing in your terrain It took me hours to whipe the perma-grin off my face. The snow was light, the terrain was versatile, and your guides inspired confidence on every run. Day two was even more amazing. I can’t wait to get back there next season. Everything from the accommodations to the gourmet lunches was first class. You guys have an amazing operation there and the terrain can’t be beat. Hope to see you soon.
